Obama waves as he and first lady arrive for the reception for the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors recipients at the White House

Musicians Herbie Hancock, Billy Joel and Carlos Santana, as well as opera singer Martina Arroyo and actress Shirley MacLaine are being honored this year for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts

The First Lady dazzled against the opulent backdrop inside the White House, which included extravagant festive decorations and towering Christmas trees
